Cyber-Bullying

Any form of bullying behavior, messages that are meant to intimidate, embarrass, harass or threaten, that are sent over any communication technology.

What are some examples of cyber-bullying?
  • Sharing embarrassing pictures &videos of someone online or via cell
  • Sharing 1-1 private and embarrassing conversations with others,
  • Posting mean comments about someone online
  • Creating websites dedicated to why you don't like someone
  • Stealing someone's password
  • Cyberstalking, using communication technology to stalk another person
Why do kids cyber-bully?
  • Some kids think it's cool to be cruel
  • To be popular or fit in
  • They are jealous of another person
  • To get a reaction
  • For revenge
  • They have been cyber-bullied
How is cyber-bullying different from traditional bullying?
  • When kids are being bullied in school they can leave the bullies behind them when they go home for the day. Online, bullies can reach their targets 24/7.
  • Information posted online can be read by millions of people
  • Information is passed along in an instant
  • The bully is separated from the target and does not see the target's reaction
  • Bullies are likely to say things that are more hurtful then they would say in person when they do not actually see the pain they are causing
  • Information posted online is permanent
How can cyber-bullying affect someone?
  • They may isolate themselves from friends and family
  • They may lose interest in activities
  • They may become depressed
  • They may miss school
  • Their grades may drop
What can you do?
  • Create cyber-peace: be kind online
  • Tell a trusted adult
  • Do not encourage the bully
  • Do not respond
  • Do not forward the message
